The Architecture Of Hesitation
2026

The Architecture of Hesitation
is developed through a process of excavation and layering, treating the canvas as a site of negotiation between mark, material, and space. The work begins with a conceptual intervention: existing texts are deconstructed using a cut-out technique and embedded within the surface, forming the underlying structure of the composition. The surface evolves through a dialogue between transparency and density. Fluid acrylic washes establish an atmospheric ground before successive layers of graphite and charcoal disrupt the embedded text. I utilized a self-made brush to create concentrated organic clusters of color, translating the illegible language into gestural rhythms that sit between the layers.Material tension plays a central role. Soft pastels and oil sticks create bold, resistant marks that assert themselves on the surface, while fine pencil scratches recede and hover at the edge of visibility. This layered history allows the raw canvas to function as an active presence – a Leerraum – shaping the fragile balance between articulation and restraint.
